| 1999 Tibbitts Presidential Award for Small Business; Awarded Most Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Projects |
As a small business, SESI prides itself on attracting and retaining the industry’s top technology experts. SESI is primarily focused on two areas: 1) research and development (SESI R&D Center), as it applies to bio-chemical, laser/optics, aviation, missile and other DoD weapon system hardware; and 2) weapon system manufacturing and integration.
Research and Development
SESI is a unique small businesss specializing in research and development of unique and versatile LIDARs, tunable solid state lasers, MALDI, and electro-optic sensor systems. SESI provides science, research and development and other technical/engineering services to Government institutes and other commercial customers.
SESI’ R&D Center comprises laboratory space, a clean room, specialized and diagnostic equipment for all aspects laser and lidar electro-optical instrument research and development work. SESI has engaged in R&D activities involving electro-optical systems totally independently, without requiring Government furnished equipment. SESI’ highly diversified staff of international technical experts, fluent in 7 languages, consists of approximately 60 staff members, more than 60% of whom hold PhDs in physical, chemical, bio-chemical sciences and engineering fields. In addition to our research scientists, SESI’ engineering staff of 30 plus includes mechanical, electrical, optical, and software engineering disciplines.
SESI has developed diagnostic equipment for its LIDAR programs allowing extensive laboratory testing to ensure system performance before field testing. These include measurements of alignment, optical efficiency, noise, beam shape, and spectral distribution. SESI has the facilities and expertise to safely mimic a variety of test sites and conditions as well as several simulants and interferants.
The SESI patent portfolio contains over a dozen patents including ion-traps for mass spectrometers, MALDI, aerosol lidar optical architectures and tunable lasers. In 1999, SESI received the Tibbitts Presidential Award for the most Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) programs/projects. The purpose of the SBIR program is to stimulate technological innovation; increase small business participation in federal research and development; foster and encourage participation by minority and disadvantaged persons in technological innovation; and increase private sector commercialization of technology derived from federal research and development.
