Micro Pulse Lidar system
Micro Pulse Lidar

SESI's Micro Pulse Lidar (MPL) is offered for application in atmospheric measurement of aerosols and cloud parameters with a high range resolution and sensitivity. The MPL has proven performance characteristics through wide acceptance and application for atmospheric aerosols and cloud measurements in conjunction with the global network of long term climate measurement (ARM program of DOE) in USA as well as foreign research communities including Japan, Korea, and China.

The MPL provides high sensitivity and high resolution atmospheric backscatter data that is well calibrated, using a high accuracy internal radiation calibration system that is automatically maintained for the life of the system.  The signal (combination of the molecular and aerosol signal) can then be analyzed to extract the aerosol concentration profile. Subsequent meteorological application parameters are derived from the data set to obtain the boundary layer height, cloud base height and cloud vertical extent. The MPL generated long term data set is archived at a web site, http://mplnet.gsfc.nasa.gov and widely used in the scientific community for meteorological and climate study. The MPL aerosol data has also been extensively used for optical oceanographic research programs at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida.
